Wind Picks up Win over Top 40 Opponent to Open Season
Sep 23, 2016 | Women's Tennis
Tigers grab three singles win on opening day in Kansas City.
MEMPHIS – Redshirt junior Anki Wind came back from a 6-2 opening set loss to upend #36 ranked Bea Machado Santos of Missouri, 2-6, 7-5, 6-0 in her first singles match back after missing most of last spring due to injury.
"It was a good day for Memphis," Head Coach Hayden Perez said. "It is exciting to watch the team compete today for the first time this fall. This tournament will serve as an indication of where we are now and what we need to work on. Anki's effort stood out to me today; she has worked hard to get back to where she is and this only validates it."
Wind's win in singles was one of three on the day for the Lady Tigers. Senior Marta Morga also battled in a 6-2, 7-6 win over Missouri's Tate Schroeder, while freshman Josephine Cao picked up her first collegiate singles win, 6-4, 7-6 (6) over Claire Sullivan of host Missouri.
Memphis also played two rounds of doubles on Friday morning, changing up the doubles lineups to get a bead on how the lineup may shake out when spring dual season rolls around. Wind and Hanna Sohn picked up a 6-1 win over the team of Hayley Haakenstad and Mary Hanna of Nebraska for the lone doubles win of the morning for Memphis, but sisters Katherine and Josephine Cao battled back from a 6-1 loss to Louisville to force a tiebreaker against their opponents from Nebraska, but fell 7-6 (1).
Memphis will play two rounds of doubles and a round of singles again on Saturday, starting against opponents from Louisville at 9 a.m. and against Nebraska at 10 a.m. Live scoring can be found at Mizzou.Statbroadcast.com
