Senior named league's Female Runner of the Week.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis senior Martina Rodriguez Sala has been named the American Athletic Conference Female Runner of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. It is her second league cross country weekly honor this season.
Last Saturday, Rodriguez Sala helped lead the Tigers women's squad to the 26th-annual Rhodes College Invitational championship. It was the third-straight Rhodes College Invitational crown for the Memphis women's program.
Rodriguez Sala won the Rhodes College Invitational women's individual title for the second year in a row. She crossed the 5k finish line in a time of 17:34.41 last Saturday. Rodriguez Sala led a pack of Tigers women's runners that placed four in event's top-six, including junior Chelsea Ladd who finished fewer than 17 seconds behind her (17:51.08) in second place.
The Olot, Spain, native earned her first career American Athletic Conference weekly accolade earlier this season when she was named the league's Female Runner of the Week Sept. 6. The honor followed her fourth-place performance in the season-opening Brooks Twilight Classic. Rodriguez Sala ran a 5k time of 17:24.88 in the Sept. 3 meet.
Last season, Rodriguez Sala earned All-American Athletic Conference cross country honors with her fourth-place finish at the league's championships meet. It was the best finish by a female runner at a conference championships meet in school history.
The Memphis men's and women's cross country squads are back in action at the Austin Peay Invitational in Clarksville, Tenn., Saturday. The meet is slated for a 9 a.m. (CT) start.
