Tigers to play second team this season from the Big 12 Conference
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis women's soccer team will play its final two non-conference matches this weekend, starting with a highly-anticipated game against Oklahoma State Friday at 7 p.m. at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The Tigers (5-3-0) final non-league game will be at UT Martin Sunday at 7 p.m.
"Oklahoma State has consistently been a top program," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "We know we are going to have our hands full and we know we are going to have to be sharp to give ourselves a chance to win. This will be a game between two teams that play similar styles."
The Tigers and Cowgirls have played three times since 2010. Oklahoma State has won all three matches by a one-goal margin, including a 3-2 match at Mike Rose Soccer Complex in 2012.
Friday night the Memphis VisionWalk team 'Reti to Fight the Pig' will be in attendance, to help raise awareness for the Foundation Fighting Blindness. The foundation funds research for prevention, treatments, and cures for many retinal degenerative diseases, including Retinitis Pigmentosa, which assistant coach Jonny Walker's youngest son is affected by. There will be a table set up in the concourse where fans can learn more about how to help. The VisionWalk team will also have games and giveaways for fans.
Memphis senior forward Valerie Sanderson scored yet again last weekend, helping the Tigers take down Rice, 1-0. She now leads the team with six goals and 14 points.
The Tigers were stifled by Oklahoma in the second game of last weekend's Tulsa Classic. Memphis had nine total shots in the match but only one was on target, while Oklahoma scored quick back-to-back goals in the second half to take a 2-0 win.
"We had a tough game Sunday so this is a test of our character. How will we bounce back from one tough game to another tough game. This is great preparation for our conference and teams like USF, UCF and UConn. Oklahoma State has some very good players that we are going to have to focus on and try to take them out of their comfort zone. They are extremely athletic and physical," said Monaghan.
The Cowgirls come into the weekend having won back-to-back matches, over Abilene Christian and UTSA, combining to shutout the two teams 7-0.
Senior forward Courtney Dike leads the way for OSU, scoring five goals this season and totaling 12 points. In her career, Dike has played in 68 games with 67 starts.
Junior goalkeeper Michela Ongaro has started all eight matches this season and has a 1.68 goals against average with 24 saves. Ongaro ranks in the career top-10 at OSU in shutouts (10), saves (139) and GAA (1.16).
The Tigers will get sophomore forward Marie Levasseur back on the field after she missed last weekend's matches to participate in Canadian National Team camp in preparation for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
"Anytime you lose one of your big players, its tough. Marie had a good freshman year and she has established herself as one of our top players. It was tough to be missing one of our big weapons last week so we are super excited to have her back."
The Tigers will open American Athletic Conference play next weekend with a pair of road matches, first at Temple on Sept. 29 at 2:30 p.m. (CT) before playing at UConn on Oct. 2 at noon (CT).
