Memphis registers seven shots in the setback
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of Memphis men's soccer team concluded its California trip with a hard fought loss against No. 13/9 San Diego State Sunday afternoon by a score of 2-0. The defeat drops the Tigers at 3-3-0 overall this season.
Â
"Specifically for today, I learned that my team can play quality soccer for 90 minutes," said head coach Richard Mulrooney. "Friday night we were disappointed that we only put up a fight for 30 minutes and Cal State Fullerton took advantage of that and beat us. That wasn't the case today. I think we learned a lot about ourselves this weekend."
Â
Just three minutes into the contest, San Diego State fired its first shot of the game. The Memphis offense stormed back by rattling off three unanswered shots of its own including one off the crossbar by Hector Cantele in the 22nd minute. Two of the three Memphis shots were on goal in that span.
Â
A yellow card in the box on Memphis resulted in a penalty kick for San Diego State. The Aztecs converted and took the lead in the 32nd minute of the match.
Â
At the half, Memphis led the Aztecs in shots and shots on goal.
Â
Memphis fired off the first shot of the second half, but once again San Diego State registered the save. In the 89th minute, San Diego State scored its second goal of the match to put the game all but out of reach for the Tigers.
Â
"I told the guys to keep their head held high and that we can compete with anyone in the country. We proved that today," added Mulrooney. "We just have to fight through this and find a way to get a result in the next game."
Â
The Tigers return home this week for three straight, beginning with a match against SIU Edwardsville Wednesday night. Kick-off at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex is slated for 7:00 p.m. Live streaming will be available on the Memphis Tiger Network and live stats can be found at www.gotigersgo.com.
