Award-winning youth player to suit up for Memphis in 2016
DALLAS, Texas – Memphis freshman Jamiera Lunsford has been awarded the U-18 Golden Ball, annually given to the player who has the greatest competitive impact in the US Youth Soccer National Championships. Previous winners of the awards include former NCAA All-Americans Lindsey Tarpley and Kerri Hanks.
"Its great for Jamiera and great any time one of our players receives an honor of this caliber," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "It shows the potential that Jamiera has. She has some special qualities about her and our hope is that she is able to transfer her success at the club level to the college level."
Lunsford helped lead Kings Hammer Academy's U18 girls squad to the tournament semifinals at the National Championships. The Cincinnati, Ohio (Walnut Hills) product, led KHA in scoring at the tournament, recording two goals, including a game-winner.
She was also named to the U-18 Best 11 Team for her performances at the tournament, which ran from July 26-31.
Lunsford is one of 10 freshmen entering their first season with the Memphis Tigers, which opened preseason camp this week. The young Tigers have just over two weeks to prepare for the regular season opener on August 19 against Southeastern Louisiana at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Memphis will have the opportunity to test itself in two preseason matches before the opener, first at Mississippi State on Aug. 10 and at Lipscomb on Aug. 12.
