Women's tennis' number one singles player coming back from knee injury.
MEMPHIS – Anki Wind has started back on her road to recovery from a knee injury. This past weekend, she competed in the ITA National Summer Championships, advancing to the round of 32 in her first match action since suffering an injury in January.
"Anki has worked hard in her rehab and put in a lot of court time recently to prepare for this event and to help her team this fall and next spring," Head Coach Hayden Perez said. "It was exciting to have her return to competitive tennis for the first time in seven months. I am proud of her."
Heavy rains in Indiana moved the matches indoors and shortened the matches to an eight game pro-set, not a terrible thing for someone coming back from injury.
Wind opened the draw with a win against Indiana's Emma Love, 8-1, then downed Wisconsin's Kelsey Grambeau, 8-2. In the round of 32, Wind drew number four seeded Gaby Smith of USC and battled, but fell, 8-5.
Wind was the team's top returning singles player last season, appearing in the national singles rankings and coming in to what would have been her junior season after teaming with former teammate Alyssa Hibberd and advancing to the NCAA doubles tournament the season prior, the first tandem in school history to do so.
But an injury early in the dual season cost Wind all of her junior spring campaign. That opened the door for Hanna Sohn to step up to play one singles on the year, and the newcomer responded by going 5-8 at one singles and 11-12 overall. Sohn finished the year in the regional rankings and should give Memphis more strength atop the lineup with the return of Wind to the lineup when the fall season starts in September.
Memphis will also have three newcomers on the 2016-17 roster: twin sisters Josephine and Katherine Cao out of Lenexa, Kan., and Clara Kuehn from Germany.
