Tigers Volleyball Holds First Scrimmage Saturday

Squad's second scrimmage set for Aug. 20.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – It's under two weeks until the University of Memphis volleyball team is "Set to Roar" into its 2016 season, and on Saturday, the Tigers held their first preseason intrasquad scrimmage.
Â
The Black team won all four games over the Gray squad by scores of 25-21, 25-23, 25-10 and 25-18.
Â
The scores and statistics, though, did not matter as much Saturday. The coaching staff was pleased with the team's defense in the scrimmage, as that was a focus during week one of preseason. But, head coach April Jauregui also noted some areas the Tigers need work on in the second week of preseason drills.
Â
"We saw a lot of good things," said Tigers head coach April Jauregui. "We've been working on our defense and transition this past week, and we executed that today.
Â
"Now, going into this week, we need to focus on our serve/receive a lot. That was the one area we struggled with during today's scrimmage, but understandably so, because we hadn't worked on it much last week. We saw a lot of positives and got some jitters out before next Saturday (team's second scrimmage)."
Â
Memphis holds its second preseason scrimmage – along with a clinic – next Saturday, Aug. 20 at 2 p.m. (CT) at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Jauregui looks for her squad to make progress as the season-opening Memphis Invitational approaches Aug. 26.
Â
"From where we've come since our first practice Tuesday, I'm very pleased," Jauregui said. "We'll focus on execution of other areas this week and hope to see improvements next Saturday."
