Tigers Wrap Up Camp Lambuth

Following four days in Jackson, the Tigers return to Memphis to continue training camp
JACKSON, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger football team completed its retreat to the University of Memphis Lambuth campus with a scrimmage at Trinity Christian Academy Saturday morning in front of a crowd of excited Tiger fans.
The Tigers played more than 100 snaps in the team's first full scrimmage of fall camp. After the completion of practice the players and coaches were greeted on the field by the Tiger fans, who liked what they saw from the team in just their 10th practice of the fall.
With less than half of fall camp completed before the September 3 season opener against Southeast Missouri at the Liberty Bowl, Memphis head coach Mike Norvell emphasized that the Tigers still have room for improvement.
"That was practice 10 and we have 19 more opportunities to get better," Norvell said. "We understand that process, and we are physically getting after it. The defense came out with a lot of energy, and I thought it was a really good work day all around. I didn't know what to expect from the fans, but just before we started, looking up into the stands and seeing a sea of blue is pretty cool."
Redshirt freshman running back Darrell Henderson was one of the bright spots. The Batesville, Miss. product, provided the biggest play of the day, catching a screen pass and sprinting 90 yards for a touchdown. Henderson also carried the ball well and had a few big gains on the ground.
Overall the defense may have won the day though. Senior defensive backs Dontrell Nelson and Arthur Maulet both had big days. Nelson, who already has three career interceptions, picked off a pass while Maulet and Jonathan Cook added a pair of pass breakups each. The defensive line also looked strong, recording eight sacks during the game.
The Tigers will now return to Memphis after their stay at UofM Lambuth this week but Norvell hinted that he could be bringing his team back to Jackson again next year and many years to follow.
"I loved this entire experience, and we are looking to make this a Memphis Tiger Tradition. You look at the time the players have spent together, to see them interacting, finding out more about their teammates, their brothers on their team, it was an incredible trip," said Norvell.
Memphis will open the 2016 football season on September 3rd, taking on the Redhawks of Southeast Missouri with kickoff set for 6:00 p.m. at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Tickets for the opening game and the entire seven-game home schedule can be purchased by calling the University of Memphis Athletics Ticket Office at 901-678-2331 or visiting GoTigersGoTix.com.
