Tigers Spend Day of Recovery with Long Season in Mind

Memphis completed its last full day at Lambuth before 10 a.m. Saturday scrimmage
JACKSON, Tenn. – There are no days off during preseason camp. But when the team practices every day, sometimes twice a day, the players need time for their bodies to recover.
"We looked at doing something different because it's been a tough nine days on their bodies. We wanted to take the team off of their feet a little bit and focus more on the mental aspect," Memphis head coach Mike Norvell said. "Saturday I want to see a team really flying around because it's a big scrimmage. It is going to be a great evaluation."
Instead of taking part in the scheduled two-hour practice Thursday morning at the University of Memphis Lambuth Campus, the Tigers went through a walkthrough and won't return to the field until Saturday's 10 a.m. scrimmage at Trinity Christian Academy.
Following the walkthrough the Tigers participated in more teambuilding exercises and spent some time at the pool as another opportunity to get off their feet. Memphis Director of Athletic Performance Josh Storms knows that this opportunity to recover could benefit them much later in the season
"It's a long season and we're not just trying to be great in the first week of September, we're trying to be great into December," Storms said. "Typically the biggest workload of the entire year is in the first week of practices. The guys are going from summer conditioning straight into football and you push them to the edge, find out where you are at that point and then back it down a bit."
There are a variety of methods that the staff uses to help the players recover from the stress they put on their bodies throughout the year.
"From a recovery standpoint, we have the cold tubs available every day after practice. We want to help them to bounce back. Part of the reason we train during camp isn't just to maintain strength but also to maintain the mobility. That's part of the reason we squat every day that we lift during camp, to maintain that mobility and facilitate recovery," said Storms.
Thursday's recovery day wasn't originally scheduled as part of the team's trip to Lambuth, but the coaching staff and sport performance staff had discussed the possibility of changing things up as camp progressed.
"We talked about having this recovery day coming into it but we didn't tell the guys beforehand. We don't like dangling that carrot out because you could get a false motivation to come out and work. We would rather see how they come out on their own and how they perform. That way you get a true idea of where the team is at mentally right now."
The Tigers will complete their stay at the UofM Lambuth Campus on Saturday with a full team scrimmage at Trinity Christian Academy at 10 a.m. Following the scrimmage fans are encouraged to stay for a meet and greet with head coach Mike Norvell and his staff. The meet and greet portion of the program is expected to start around 11:15 a.m. and food and beverages will be provided.
