Equipment staff had tall task of taking Memphis football on the road
JACKSON, Tenn. – It takes a staff working as a well-oiled machine to move a football team during preseason camp.
This week Memphis equipment manager Marc Hohorst and his staff had the task of essentially relocating the football program's Billy J. Murphy Complex onto the University of Memphis Lambuth Campus for a three-day off-site camp.
Hohorst has one assistant and 10 student managers, who call themselves the "A Team," that work closely with him throughout the year.
"The student managers are the backbone of the equipment staff," Hohorst said. "We've got a really great group of guys working for us. They've taken a lot of pride in getting things done, no matter how hard the task may be. They take a lot of pride in being students at the university and being a part of the Tiger program."
The staff approached this week similar to that of a bowl game. Using a semi-truck in addition to a box truck, the staff relocated all of the players' gear in addition to athletic training and weight room equipment.
They were able to start packing some things as far as a week in advance but with the team practicing every day there was only so much that could be done early.
"There were a few things we could pre-pack, but given that we still had practice, we had to keep most of it on the field. After practice Wednesday we had a two-hour mad rush to finish packing everything and get over here before we started our walk through," said Hohorst.
The team travelled with about 210 total sets of practice gear, so each player has two sets, in addition to the royal blue helmets and as many pairs of shoes as they could fit. With that much gear, also means a lot of laundry, all of which has to be done off-site.
"Our main reason going off campus right now is for laundry. Last night we had about six or eight washers going at a time, it took us about three hours to get the laundry done. It'll be about the same thing again tonight. Since they dropped football (at Lambuth), they don't have laundry facilities, so we're at the coin laundry mat here."
The team was back on the field Thursday morning for its first full practice session on the field at Lambuth. Following practice the Tigers had a little fun, taking part in some light-hearted teambuilding exercises. There was whiffle ball, table tennis, dodge ball and a team skill game involving building a tower out of playing cards.
The Tigers will take the field for a full team scrimmage at Trinity Christian Academy Saturday morning. The team will step on the field at approximately 10 a.m. and the scrimmage will be open to the public. Following the scrimmage, fans will have the opportunity to meet with Coach Norvell and the Memphis football coaching staff.
