Tigers ready to test themselves against someone else
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis women's soccer team will have the first opportunity to test itself against another opponent, when it faces Mississippi State Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Starkville in the first preseason match for both teams. The Tigers will have a quick turnaround, as they will then head to Nashville to face Lipscomb in the team's final exhibition match on Friday, August 12 at 6 p.m.
"There's definitely not a lack of talent on this team. Now it's about putting all of those pieces together," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "Right now we are at a point where we are trying to find out what the best position for some of these players is. That takes time, but that's why you play exhibition games. We are excited to get out there and play against somebody other than ourselves."
The Memphis squad is made up of 17 newcomers, including preseason American Athletic all-conference selections Marie Levasseur and Valerie Sanderson, and 10 true freshmen. Memphis returning players accounted for 20 of the 22 goals scored in 2015 (90%).
The Tigers and Bulldogs met last season in an exhibition match in Starkville, Miss. with MSU taking a 2-1 win.
Mississippi State will also feature a young squad, losing only four players from last season's team. The Bulldogs roster is made up of three seniors, 10 juniors, eight sophomores and eight freshmen.
"Anytime you step on the field you want to win but for us it is more about getting a good feel for some of our kids. We want to create a good base with this game and with each game move a step in the right direction. We are fortunate that we have a game Wednesday and then a quick turnaround and play again Friday," Monaghan said.
There is just over one week until the regular season opener against Southeastern Louisiana, scheduled for August 19 at 7 p.m. at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
