MEMPHIS – Sophomore center Drew Kyser was named to the Rimington Trophy Fall Watch List that was released Wednesday morning. The award is presented each year to athletes who excel at the center position.
The Rimington Trophy committee uses three prestigious teams to determine a winner: the Walter Camp Foundation (WCF), Sporting News and the Football Writers Association of American (FWAA). The center with the most first team votes from those three teams will determine the winner. If there is a tie with first team votes, then the center with the most second team votes will win. If there is still a tie, the winner will be determined by a majority vote of from the Rimington Trophy committee. The winner will be recognized at the Rimington Trophy Presentation at the Rococo Theatre in Lincoln, Neb., Jan. 14, 2017.
Kyser, a native of Opelika, Alabama, played in all 13 games last season as a true freshman, adding 12 starts. After starting in the season opener against Missouri State, Kyser backed up 2015 Rimington Trophy watch list candidate Gabe Kuhn in a road win at Kansas in the second game of the year, then started at center for the remainder of the 2015 season, allowing Kuhn to move to guard.
Kyser blocked last season for a Memphis offense that set a single season school record with 6,330 yards of total offense and that finished the year ranked 19th in the NCAA in total offense (486.9 ypg).
Memphis' offensive line also helped the team rank 13th in pass efficiency (158.23) and 11th in scoring offense (40.2 ppg). Memphis converted third downs last year at a rate of 48.8 percent, eighth in the NCAA. The Tigers' red zone offense was tied for 18th in the country with an 88.9 percent success rate.
A graduate of Opelika High School, Kyser is one of four starters returning to the offensive line from last season. The Tigers' lone loss on the offensive line from last year was senior Taylor Fallin, who signed a free agent deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Kyser also finished last season as a member of the Tiger 3.0 Club for posting a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The 2016 Tigers, under first year head coach Mike Norvell, kick off their seven-game home slate with a Sept. 3rd matchup against regional foe Southeast Missouri at 6 p.m. at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Season tickets for the seven-game home schedule are on sale now starting at just $100. New this year at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium is the addition of wider chair-back seats along both sidelines.
