Alex McClure Joins Memphis Baseball Coaching Staff
Jul 28, 2016 | Baseball
University of Memphis head baseball coach Daron Schoenrock announced that Alex McClure has joined his staff as assistant coach and camps coordinator.
Â
McClure, who will coach the infielders, spent last season in a similar role at Arkansas State University. The Clarksville, Tenn. native, played four seasons of professional baseball in the Kansas City Royals and Miami Marlins organizations before joining the coaching ranks.
Â
"I think we have landed a future star in coaching in Alex McClure," said Schoenrock. "I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Alex play throughout his prep career and mature into the professional player that he became. He has a passion for teaching, a desire to build relationships with players and a hunger to serve the University of Memphis. We are thrilled that he and his wife Kelley will be joining the Tiger Baseball family."
Â
Following his playing career he served as an assistant coach and trainer at Rossview High School in Clarksville, Tenn., for a season. He worked with the junior varsity and varsity teams coaching infield, hitting, speed training, weightlifting, and mental preparation. He helped the RHS varsity team win the region championship and sub-state appearance.
Â
Prior to joining Arkansas State he spent one year as a coach and trainer with Diamond Dreams Sports Coaching in Sydney, Australia.
Â
"I'm very excited, I feel honored and very thankful for the opportunity," McClure said. "I'm from Tennessee so to be able to join a program like this and be back in my home state means a lot. I'm thankful to Coach Schoenrock for giving me the opportunity to be part of his staff."
Â
McClure played collegiately at Walters State Junior College in 2008 and Vanderbilt in 2009, where he hit .378 in 29 games as a sophomore infielder, before transferring to Middle Tennessee State prior to the 2010 season. McClure sat out the season due to NCAA transfer rules, but was drafted in the 11th round by the Kansas City Royals.
Â
A second baseman/shortstop by trade, McClure advanced as high as Double-A Northwest Arkansas within the Royals' organization in 2012 before doing the same during the 2013 season. In 2012 he was honored with the Mike Sweeney Award, which recognizes a player who best represents the organization on and off the field.
Â
He was traded to the Miami Marlins during the 2013 season and got to the team's Double-A affiliate, the Jacksonville Suns, before retiring from professional baseball. During his pro career he hit 36 doubles, stole 44 bases, had 89 RBIs, and registered a .969 fielding percentage in 342 games.
Â
McClure graduated from Middle Tennessee in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in organizational communication. He was on the dean's list at MTSU in the fall and spring of 2010, while also earning the Blue Raiders' "Bust Your Butt" Award in 2010.
