Rising junior women's golfer goes six under over the back nine for the win.
MEMPHIS – Rising junior women's golfer Emily Goldenstein went six under over the final nine holes of the Missouri Women's Golf Association (MWGA) championships held at Twin Oaks Country Club in Springfield, Wednesday. Her back nine closed the win with a 214, a six-stroke margin over second place finisher, Chandler Gallagher. In all, only two golfers carded a round under par on Wednesday, including the -5 on the day for Goldenstein, while just four finished under par (222).
Goldenstein was +1 through the opening nine holes, grabbing a pair of birdies to offset a trio of bogeys on the opening half. At 10, she carded the first of two eagles in the back half. Her eagle on 10 was the lone one of the tournament for the 476-yard 10th hole.
A pair of bogeys followed that eagle on 10, but Goldenstein settled it down on 13 with a par to set up her last five holes. She then ripped off four straight birdies on holes 14 through 17 and closed the tournament in style with an eagle on the par five final hole, her second eagle of the day and just the third of the tournament that the 403-yard 18th hole gave up.
Goldenstein is one of seven returnees for Memphis heading in to 2016-17. A two-time member of the Women's Golf Coaches of America (WGCA) All-American Scholar Team, Goldenstein finished tied for 20th with teammate Leighann Cabush at the American Athletic Conference championships back in May.
An accounting major, she competed in eight of nine team events last season as a sophomore and posted three top 10 finishes and four top 20 finishes. In her two-year Memphis career, she has posted two top five, seven top 10 and nine top-20 finishes in 18 events.
She will be reunited with her Lady Tiger teammates in about a month as classes begin at the University of Memphis on Aug. 22nd. Goldenstein and the Memphis women's golf team will open their five-tournament fall slate n Sept. 12-13 at the Mercedes Benz tournament in Knoxville. Memphis will host its lone home event during the fall, hosting the Memphis Women's Intercollegiate Oct. 17-18 at Ridgeway Country Club.
