Jul 18, 2016 | Women's Track and Field
Women's javelin preliminaries set for Tuesday, finals are Wednesday.
Bydgoszcz, POLAND – University of Memphis rising sophomore Ashley Pryke continues her summer on the track and field world stage this week when she competes at the 2016 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Outdoor World Junior Championships. The meet runs July 19-24.
Pryke, a Canadian national team member, qualified for the women's javelin at the IAAF World Junior Championships, and the event begins Tuesday, July 19 with two preliminary groups. The first preliminary is scheduled for a 2:05 a.m. (CT) start, with the second to follow at 3:50 a.m. (CT). The women's javelin final is Wednesday, July 20 at 12:45 p.m. (CT).
The Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, native qualified for the IAAF World Junior Championships with her 162-6 (49.53m) javelin throw at a Canadian provincial meet in mid-June. Two weeks later, Pryke improved her personal-best mark with a 165-1 (50.32m) throw to win the junior women's javelin crown at the 2016 Canadian Track and Field Championships in Edmonton, Alberta. Her throw was not only the junior women's top mark at the championships meet, but also would have placed fourth in the Canadian senior women's competition.
Pryke, who completed her freshman campaign at Memphis in early June, set the Tigers women's javelin school record in only her first collegiate season (160-10; 49.03m). Her record javelin throw came in claiming first place in the event at Southeast Missouri's Joey Haines Invitational in mid-April.
Her 160-10 javelin throw was the 39th-best mark nationally and the eighth-best throw among the nation's freshmen.
Pryke placed third at the 2016 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships with a 153-8 (46.84m) throw. Pryke also earned a spot at the NCAA East Preliminaries, where she placed 14th.
