Cao wins doubles title in week three.
MEMPHIS – Incoming freshman Katherine Cao added another ITA Summer Circuit championship to her resume last weekend at Wichita State, teaming with Meghan King, a Wofford signee, to win the doubles championship.
The top seeded duo in the draw, the twosome downed the team of Hanna Hills and Madison Lysaught (Washburn), 8-4, in the first round, then defeated Alix Williams (Central Oklahoma) and Shaun Williams, 8-2, in the semifinals.
In the final, the duo faced the team of Courtney Lubbers, a rising junior at Western Illinois, and Tawni Griffey, a rising senior at Emporia State, who had taken out the two seeds, 8-5, in the other semifinal. But Cao and King were not a second upset victim, winning 8-5 for Cao's second ITA Summer title. She also won the singles championship at the week one event at UMKC.
Cao also played in the 32-player singles draw, earning the two seed after her week one tournament win. She received a first round bye, then facing Griffey in the second round. Facing the rising college senior, Cao came back from a 7-5 first set loss to win the second 6-2, but then fell 10-3 in the tiebreak.
The ITA Summer Circuit began in 1993 and features 50 tournaments spread across 24 states over six weekends. Players that advance from the qualifying tournaments will qualify for the ITA Summer Nationals, held Aug. 13-16 at Indiana University. Cao has now qualified in both singles and doubles. The women's winner at the ITA Summer Championship will receive a wild card entry in to the main draw of the ITA All-American in the fall and a wild card entry in to the qualifying draw of the $50k Stockton Women's Challenger.
Week four events will be held between Friday and Monday at 10 different universities. Week four hosts are Alabama, Kansas, Louisville, Notre Dame, Rutgers, UC Davis, UNC Charlotte, UT Arlington, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in California and Linfield College in Oregon.
Cao's future teammate, Marta Morga, also added a summer title to her resume last weekend. She won the women's open singles title at the 94th annual MUNY Tennis Tournament in Delaware Park at the Miller Tennis Center in Buffalo.
