Women's golf, men's cross country and rifle receive NCAA honor.
MEMPHIS – It's been five straight years that the University of Memphis Athletic Department has had at least three programs receive Academic Progress Rate (APR) public recognition from the NCAA. Men's cross country, rifle and women's golf all received their APR Public Recognition letters on Wednesday.
The APR is a real-time measure of eligibility and retention of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team. The most recent APR scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years.
Based on their most recent multiyear Academic Progress Rate, teams earn NCAA Public Recognition Awards for posting scores in the top 10 percent of their sport. The scores required to be in the top 10 ranged from 983 to a perfect 1,000.
Women's Golf Recognition
This is the sixth straight honor for the Memphis women's golf program. The Lady Tigers have been honored a total of seven times for being in the top 10 in college golf in NCAA Division I, including each of the past six seasons. The 2014-15 team of the final year of this report also included two all-American Athletic Conference golfers (Ashley Kees and Leighann Cabush) and then-freshman Michaela Fletcher, who won her way to the NCAA Championships in 2015.
Men's cross country and the Memphis rifle teams are earning recognition for a second straight year. It is the third time in the rifle team's history they have been honored for their APR.
Rifle Recognition
The rifle team included student-athletes Haylea Broughton, Amy Fister and Beth Lee, each a Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) honoree. That same season (2015), Fister qualified for the NCAAs in small bore and posted a top 20 finish at the national championships before finishing fifth in the 2015 National Junior Rifle Olympic Championships.
Men's Cross Country Recognition
The men's cross country team from that season included Keanan Joyner, a two-time NCAA cross country regional participant who went on to receive an NCAA Ethnic Minority Program Postgraduate Scholarship and an American Athletic Conference Commissioner's Postgraduate Leadership Award. A summa cum laude graduate from the University of Memphis honors program and a four-year recipient of a University of Memphis Presidential Scholarship; he is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Florida State.
Since the NCAA began honoring athletics programs in 2004-05, Memphis has had eight teams receive public recognition a total of 25 times.
