Rising senior earns watch list spot for Wuerffel Trophy and a nomination to the AFCA Good Works Team.
MEMPHIS – Senior place kicker Jake Elliott was named to a pair of awards lists on Wednesday. He is one of 165 nominees on the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and was also named one of 88 players on the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, an award that honors academic and athletic achievement and community service.
Elliott, also a member of the Lou Groza Watch List this preseason, enters his final season as a Tiger as the two-time defending American Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Year and a three-time first team, all-conference honoree. He needs just 10 field goals and 45 points to tie the Memphis career record in both categories currently held by New England Patriots' kicker Stephen Gostkowski. Elliott was one of three finalists for the Lou Groza award last season, attending the awards ceremony in Florida, then the Home Depot College Football Awards ceremony in Atlanta later that week.
Last year, Elliott set a school record for most point-after kicks, converting all 63 attempts to improve to 144-for-144 for his career. He finished tied for eighth in the NCAA in scoring with 10.2 ppg.
Coming in to 2016, Elliott needs just 45 more points to set the Tiger school scoring record currently held by Gostkowski and needs just 38 points to move to second, where former Tiger DeAngelo Williams sits. He is currently 60-for-78 in field goal attempts in his Tiger career with a career-long of 56 yards.
A native of Western Springs, Illinois, Elliott was also named a preseason Athlon All-American earlier this month, earning third team honors. Last year, he was a Walter Camp Football Foundation second team all-America honoree.
A major in marketing, Elliott carries a 3.86 GPA and has been a multiple time honoree on the Dean's List and the Tiger 3.0 Club. He was also named to the American's All-Academic Football team in both 2013 and 2014.
The Wuerffel Trophy is presented each year by the All Sports Association in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel, the award is given to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team is in its 25th season. It was established in 1992 to recognize a select group of college football players who have made a commitment to service and enriching the lives of others.
Memphis football reports for its 2016 camp on August 3rd and opens practice the following day on the fourth. The Tigers will play seven home games in 2016, including the season opener against Southeast Missouri State, the Tigers' first game under new coach Mike Norvell.
Season tickets for the seven-game home stand are on sale now, starting at just $100. For information on tickets, including new chairback seats, please call 901-678-2331 or go to www.GoTigersGoTix.com.
