Former Fighting Hawks catcher to play for Memphis in 2017
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Brett Harrison, a catcher from Winnipeg, Manitoba, will join the University of Memphis baseball program after playing two seasons for the University of North Dakota. The junior will be eligible to play in 2017 due to an NCAA transfer exception.
"We are thrilled to be adding Brett to our roster," Memphis head coach Daron Schoenrock said. "He comes at a perfect time with the graduation of two catchers. He can bolster the experience of our catching corps. The program he is coming from was coached by a longtime friend of mine, Jeff Dodson, and we are happy that Brett found a home."
A native of Canada, Harrison hit .293 in 84 career games played for the Fighting Hawks as a catcher, first baseman and designated hitter. He finished his career with 13 doubles, two homers, 22 runs scored and 43 RBI.
Last season as a sophomore Harrison batted .279 in 39 games played (38 starts). He smacked eight doubles and a home run and drove in 26 runs. Harrison had a season-high-tying three hits and drove in a career-high four RBI in a win over Seattle.
Harrison, a product of Vauxhall Academy, made an immediate impact as a freshman at North Dakota in 2015, starting 45 games behind the plate and batting an impressive .305. He racked up a .337 batting average in conference games. Harrison hit his first collegiate homer at Northern Colorado.
"It's always great for your players to find a home, but for Brett to find a home that has such quality men coaching the program means a lot to me," said former North Dakota head coach Jeff Dodson. " Brett is a team guy and he leads by example. He is a competitor, who really likes to win and do anything he can for the club."
Harrison is the son of Glen and Jo-Anne Harrison.
