Hanssler Completes Decathlon First-Day Action At NCAA Championships

Tigers senior is in 19th place with 3782 points.
EUGENE, Ore. – University of Memphis Luis Hanssler finished the first day of competition in the men's decathlon at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships Wednesday. He is in 19th place with 3782 points after five events.
The University of Oregon's Hayward Field is hosting the four-day national meet.
Hanssler's best first-day performances were in the two track events – 100 and 400 meters. The Tigers senior placed 10th in the 400 meters (49.78) and 12th in the 100 meters (11.05). Hanssler's 400 meters time was only 0.5 off his personal-best in the event (49.28).
The Ratingen, Germany, native's top field finish came in the high jump, where he placed 17th (6-2.25; 1.89m). Hanssler was 19th in the long jump (22-5; 6.83m) and 21st in the shot put (40-6.25; 12.35m).
Hanssler, the three-time American Athletic Conference decathlon title holder, continues action in the men's decathlon Thursday, June 9 with five more events. Hanssler's day starts at 12:30 p.m. (CT) with the 110-meter hurdles, followed by the discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 meters.
Senior Carolina Carmichael also is in action in the women's pole vault Thursday. The event starts at 7 p.m. (CT).
