Hanssler Completes Decathlon First-Day Action At NCAA Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – University of Memphis Luis Hanssler finished the first day of competition in the men's decathlon at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships Wednesday. He is in 19^th place with 3782 points after five events.

The University of Oregon's Hayward Field is hosting the four-day national meet.

Hanssler's best first-day performances were in the two track events – 100 and 400 meters. The Tigers senior placed 10^th in the 400 meters (49.78) and 12^th in the 100 meters (11.05). Hanssler's 400 meters time was only 0.5 off his personal-best in the event (49.28).

The Ratingen, Germany, native's top field finish came in the high jump, where he placed 17^th (6-2.25; 1.89m). Hanssler was 19^th in the long jump (22-5; 6.83m) and 21^st in the shot put (40-6.25; 12.35m).

Hanssler, the three-time American Athletic Conference decathlon title holder, continues action in the men's decathlon Thursday, June 9 with five more events. Hanssler's day starts at 12:30 p.m. (CT) with the 110-meter hurdles, followed by the discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 meters.

Senior Carolina Carmichael also is in action in the women's pole vault Thursday. The event starts at 7 p.m. (CT).
