Nine-game home slate features matchup with Oklahoma State
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis women's soccer program has released its challenging 2016 schedule that features six NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago and nine matches at Mike Rose Soccer Stadium, head coach Brooks Monaghan announced Thursday.
"Overall we are very pleased with this schedule. What we always try to do is play a schedule that will prepare us for conference," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "If we do extremely well in our non-conference matches and if we are successful in conference it puts us in a good position for the NCAA Tournament. The ultimate goal for this team is to make the NCAA Tournament."
The Tigers will face six NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago, including American Athletic Conference foes Cincinnati, UCF, UConn, USF, and non-conference teams Ole Miss and Southeastern Louisiana. The schedule also features two Big 12 opponents, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
Memphis will open the season at home with a pair of matches on the opening weekend. Memphis hosts Southeastern Louisiana Friday, August 19 at 7 p.m. before welcoming Western Kentucky Sunday at 1 p.m. The Tigers are 2-0 against the SLU Lions with wins in 2000 and 2014. Memphis was previously undefeated against WKU before falling 2-1 last season in Bowling Green, Ky. to make the series 3-1.
The Tigers first road match of the season will be on Aug. 26 at rival Ole Miss, who won in overtime last season at Mike Rose before advancing to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
A series with Arkansas-Little Rock will be renewed in the Tigers' second road match on Aug. 28. Memphis and UALR first played in 1995 and then met every season from 2007-2011. The Tigers have won six straight and hold a 7-1 lead in the all-time series.
Memphis will open September with the program's first ever match against Missouri-Kansas City, who is coming off of the winningest season in program history last year.
The month of September will also see the Tigers travel to Tulsa, Okla. to play Rice and Oklahoma in a weekend tournament.
The Tigers' final home non-conference match will be against Oklahoma State on Sept. 16 at Mike Rose. Memphis is winless in three meetings against the Cowboys with one-goal losses in 2010, 2012, and 2014. The final non-conference match is on the road at UT-Martin.
Memphis will open league play with a tough road trip to play Temple on Sept. 29 before going to UConn on October 2.
The Tigers will then get three straight American matches at home, hosting East Carolina, Cincinnati, and Tulsa in succession. Memphis will make the trip to Texas to play at SMU and Houston before returning home to host USF and UCF to end the regular season.
"There is not an easy match on our schedule and that includes in conference. The American is a very strong women's soccer conference. It is nice to be in a league where you feel like if you finish in the top five you have a shot to get into the NCAA Tournament," said Monaghan.
This season's American Athletic Conference tournament will yet again have a different format than the previous seasons. The entire event will be played at the home of the 2016 regular season champion and top seed in the tournament. The top-six teams in the league will advance to the postseason tournament.
