Tigers participating in National Alumni Tournament for first time.
MEMPHIS – A handful of former men's tennis players are putting on the blue and gray again for the University of Memphis, as the program is fielding a team in the National Alumni Tournament in Ft. Worth that begins this afternoon. David Henry (2008-2012), Michael LaHaie (1999-2002), Joe Schmulian (2001-03), Jordan Smith (2007-11), Ben Stapp (2000-03) and Lee Taylor Walker (2002-03) will all play again under the guidance of current head coach Paul Goebel.
This is the first year the Tigers have fielded a team for the national tournament. Each team is made up of at least four players that are 25 years of age or older. The tournament, heading in to its third season, will be played on campus at TCU, where former Tiger Lee Taylor Walker is currently the women's tennis team's head coach.
Set up in a round robin format, each dual match will consist of two doubles followed by the reverse doubles. The matches will be Fast4 format, with each match being best two of three sets with a tiebreak in lieu of a third set. Each set will be to four games, with a tiebreaker at 3-all. All tie-breaks will be nine point (first to five) with a sudden death point at 4-4.
Georgia is the defending tournament champions. Last year's field included teams from Georgia, LSU, Kansas and Georgia Tech.
