Joe Salisbury Moves One Step Closer to Wimbledon
Jun 21, 2016 | Men's Tennis
2014 Memphis graduate needs two more wins to earn Wimbledon spot.
MEMPHIS – Former men's tennis player Joe Salisbury is making the most of a wild card entry in to the Wimbledon Qualifying Draw. On Tuesday, after a lengthy Monday rain delay pushed his first round match back a day, Salisbury came from a set down to upend the number 163 ranked player in the world, Alessandro Gianessi, 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3.
In the second round, scheduled to be played Wednesday, Salisbury will face American Austin Krajicek. Krajicek appeared in the Australian Open, advancing to the second round, back in January and is currently ranked 95 in the world. Krajicek also played in the Memphis Open back in February, falling in the round of 32 in singles to John Millman, and falling in the quarterfinals in doubles after defeating the Bryan brothers in the round of 16, 1-6, 7-6 (5), 12-10. He advanced to the second round of Wimbledon qualifying this week with a 6-3, 3-6, 11-9 thriller that went over two hours.
This will be the first meeting on the singles side between the two players, but they have squared off in doubles this year. Salisbury teamed with his former Memphis teammate, David O'Hare, to defeat Krajicek and his doubles partner, Nicholas Monroe, 6-1, 6-4, in the Champaign Challenger in Illinois for the duo's first professional Challenger title back in November.
Since graduating from Memphis in 2014 after helping Memphis to three straight NCAA tournament appearances, Salisbury has won nine professional doubles titles (eight with O'Hare) and one Futures singles title. He left Memphis as the program's all-time career leader in doubles wins (97) and was a three-time, all-conference player. At one point, he and O'Hare ranked as high as number three in the country for the Tigers.
The London native missed time this spring on tour due to illness, and is currently ranked No. 706 in the world in singles and 264 in doubles. Salisbury is teaming with fellow Brit Edward Corrie in the qualifying doubles draw this week as well. The gentlemen's qualifying draws are being played at the Bank of England Sports Ground in Roehampton and players need to win three singles matches to advance to the draw at Wimbledon.
Gentlemen's second round singles and first round doubles are both slated to compete on Wednesday. Live scoring is available at www.wimbledon.com.
