Tigers to play eight home matches at Mike Rose Soccer Complex
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's soccer team has released its challenging 2016 schedule that features five opponents who played in last season's NCAA Tournament, head coach Richard Mulrooney announced Monday.
The Tigers' schedule features eight matches at home and five meetings with teams that featured in the NCAA Tournament a year ago, including American Athletic Conference foes UConn, SMU, Tulsa and USF as well as Cal State Fullerton.
Memphis will open the season on the road with a match at rival UAB on August 26 before heading to Atlanta, Ga. to play at Georgia State on Aug. 28. The Tigers beat Georgia State, 2-1, last season at home.
"This is a good, balanced schedule with several competitive teams that were in the NCAA Tournament last season," said Mulrooney. "You try to set up an out of conference schedule that prepares you for the conference. With only the top four teams in our league advancing to the conference tournament, you have to make sure you're ready leading into the conference games because every point matters."
The Tigers have a marquee preseason match against Louisville that will be played on the campus of Christian Brothers University on Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. The preseason slate will finish with a home match against Union University.
The home opener at Mike Rose Soccer Complex will be against Belmont on Friday, September 2 at 5 p.m. Memphis is 13-1-0 all-time against Belmont, with the last meeting a 3-0 Tiger win in 2014. The Tigers will then host Missouri State for the first meeting between the teams since 2014.
Memphis then heads west to take on Cal State Fullerton and San Diego State at a tournament in San Deigo, Calif. The Tigers have played Fullerton three times and hold a 2-1 edge while Memphis and SDSU have never met.
A season-long homestand gets started against SIU-Edwardsville on Sept. 14 and continues against Houston Baptist later that week. Memphis will then open conference play at home against Cincinnati Sept. 24 at Mike Rose.
The month of October gets started with a pair of road games, first at Temple in league play before stepping back into non-conference play against Lipscomb in Nashville.
Memphis other home league matches are against UCF, SMU and UConn while the Tigers travel to USF and Tulsa. The final non-conference match is on the road at Central Arkansas on Oct. 18.
"This is a highly competitive league. We ended up finishing as one of the top four or five conferences in the country. We want to be one of those teams this year. Last year didn't go the way we wanted it to but to get into one of the top four spots in our conference is doable. If we have the right mindset, the sky is the limit for where we can finish this year," Mulrooney said.
The league will see another new format for the postseason tournament with the regular-season champion hosting the top four teams. The semifinals will be played Nov. 11 and the final is on Nov. 13.
