Tigers Mourn Loss of Memphis Media Icon
Jun 17, 2016 | General
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis Athletic Department joins the city of Memphis and the Mid-South in mourning the loss of long-time media representative George Lapides, who passed away Friday morning following a long battle with a lung disease called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with George's family and his many friends here in the Memphis community," said Director of Athletics Tom Bowen. "George has been a long-standing part of our sports community here in Memphis, which included his years of coverage of the Tigers. He will be long-remembered by our student-athletes and fans for his dedication to athletics throughout the Mid-South."
Lapides has been a long-time member of the Memphis sports community, serving as a member of the Memphis Press-Scimitar beginning in the 1960s. He had moved up to become that paper's Sports Editor/Columnist by the time the paper closed in 1983.
From print media, Lapides moved in to television and radio. Beginning in 1971, he hosted a daily sports talk radio show that lasted until his retirement in May while also spending ten seasons as a sports editor at WREG in Memphis.
Lapides also forayed in to the team side of athletics, spending a year at Rhodes College as the program's athletic director in 1984 before taking over the Memphis Chicks, the Double-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.
