Memphis Drops Series at Houston
May 08, 2016 | Baseball
Alex Hicks pitched six scoreless innings of relief
HOUSTON, Texas – After dominating Houston in the series opener Friday night the Memphis Tigers were unable to win the series, as the Cougars won 6-2 Sunday at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
Memphis (16-32, 7-11 American) will turn its attention to a midweek game at Arkansas State Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Jonesboro, Ark. The Tigers will be back on the road next weekend for a series at nationally ranked Tulane.
Freshman starting pitcher Jonathan Bowlan struggled early and wasn't able to rebound. He tossed two innings and allowed six runs on six hits.
The Tigers turned to Alex Hicks out of the bullpen with nobody out in the third inning and he was outstanding in relief. The freshman allowed just three hits in a career high six innings of scoreless relief. Hicks also matched his career high with four strikeouts.
The Tigers scored a run in the top of the first but would have hoped for more after Darien Tubbs started the game with a double and Zach Schritenthal followed with a single to put runners on the corners with no outs. Tubbs scored on a groundball double play that cleared the bases with two outs.
Houston quickly answered to score three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning. The Cougars never trailed again in the game.
Memphis got a run back in the top of the second after Brandon Grudzielanek started the inning with a single and stole second base. He moved to third on a passed ball and scored on an RBI groundout by Andy Bowman.
The Tigers got two hits in the first inning, one in the second inning and then just one more hit the rest of the way as Houston starter Mitch Ullom was solid in his complete-game outing.
The Cougars managed to score two more runs in the third inning to up their lead to 6-2.
Neither team managed much offensively from the fourth through ninth innings.
The Tigers' four hits were by Tubbs, Schritenthal, Grudzielanek and Chris
