Memphis Opens Series at Houston with 12-4 Win
May 06, 2016 | Baseball
All nine Memphis starters record a hit
Memphis will go for the series win over Houston in Game 2 Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
Colton Hathcock picked up the win after pitching five innings and allowing four runs on nine hits. Relievers Colton Neel and Nolan Blackwood combined to keep the Cougars off the board in the sixth through ninth innings.
Catcher Damo DeMatteo had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one driven in. The senior was solid behind the plate as well.
Third baseman Zach Schritenthal tied a career high with four runs driven in with a 3-for-5 day at the plate. Darien Tubbs, Jake Little, Brandon Grudzielanek and Chris Carrier also all had multiple-hit games.
The top of the second inning proved to be an eventful one as Memphis grabbed the lead and Houston's starting pitcher had to leave the game because of an injury.
The Tigers started the frame with back-to-back singles Grudzielanek and Andy Bowman to put two runners on with no outs. Cougars' starter Andrew Lantrip held an 0-2 count on Chris Carrier before he could no longer continue and reliever Bubba Maxwell was called on.
After Carrier advanced the runners into scoring position with a groundout, Trent Turner drove in the opening run of the game by legging out an infield single to shortstop.
The Tigers made the lead 2-0 over Houston after an error by the Cougers' first baseman trying to throw out Andy Bowman at the plate.
Houston took advantage of the fact that Memphis starting pitcher Colton Hathcock sat through the lengthy top of the second inning and struggled a bit in the bottom half.
Hathcock allowed back-to-back one out singles before a two-out two-run double by Justin Montemayor that knotted the game up 2-2.
Memphis retook the lead with a three-run top of the fourth inning. Carrier and Turner both singled on the infield with one out to start the rally before DeMatteo walked to load the bases.
Tubbs made the score 3-2 with a sacrifice fly to right field but Schritenthal provided the big blow with a two-run double into the gap in right-center field.
The Cougars got a run back in the bottom of the fourth after starting the inning with two singles. A third single of the inning drove a run to make the score 5-3. Hathcock was able to rebound to strand two runners.
Hathcock got some bad luck to start the bottom of the fifth as Houston designated hitter Joe Davis bounced a double off the third base bag. A single put runners on the corners with nobody out and a sacrifice fly brought home a run to cut the Memphis lead to 5-4 but was as close as Houston would get.
Colton Neel came out of the bullpen to start the sixth inning and got into a tough spot, loading the bases after a pair of hit batters. The freshman lefty was able to get out of the jam without any runs coming across. Neel followed that inning up with a perfect 1-2-3 seventh inning.
The Tigers were able to add to the lead with two runs in the seventh after Little and Jacob Elliott started the inning with a single and a double respectively. A sacrifice fly by Grudzielanek drove in the first run and an RBI groundout by Carrier made the score 7-4.
Memphis added another insurance run in the eighth after Darien Tubbs walked, stole second base and stole third base before scoring on an RBI single by Little.
Nolan Blackwood came out of the bullpen in the eighth inning and struck out the side swinging around a one-out walk.
The Tigers securely put the game out of reach with a four-run top of the ninth. DeMatteo provided the big blow in the inning with an RBI double.
Blackwood came back out and closed the game out with a scoreless bottom of the ninth.
