COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – University of Memphis senior Sydney Wright has been named a 2016 National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) All-American Athlete Award winner, the organization announced Sunday.
The NSCA All-American Athlete Award recognizes Wright's athletic accomplishments and her dedication to strength and conditioning. Nominated by Tigers track and field assistant coach David Queck, Wright's determination to improve in athletics while maintaining academic prominence is a great model for all Memphis student-athletes.
Wright just wrapped up an outstanding senior campaign with her first career NCAA East Preliminaries appearance this weekend. She represented the Tigers in the women's long jump at the postseason NCAA meet.
For her career, Wright competed primarily in the long and triple jumps and posted 18 top-four performances in the long jump (indoor/outdoor combined), including six first-place finishes. Wright competed in all eight conference championships meets in her career (four indoor/four outdoor) and scored team points three times.
Wright saved her best for her final campaign in 2015-16, setting personal-bests in both the long and triple jumps. She recorded her personal-best long jump of 20-2.25 (6.15m) at the 2016 Memphis Invitational in late April. Wright's mark was only .75 shy of the school record (20-3) set in 1996.
At the 2016 American Athletic Conference Championships in mid-May, Wright had her best long jump performance at a conference outdoor meet with her fifth-place finish (19-4; 5.89m). Over her career in conference outdoor championships meets, she improved her long jump mark by nearly two feet from her freshman to senior seasons (17-8.75, freshman; 19-4, senior).
Wright also secured her top indoor long jump finish as a senior, winning the event at the 2016 Southeast Missouri Redhawks Invitational in February.
In the triple jump, Wright posted her personal-best mark of 39-8.5 (12.10m) at the 2016 Auburn War Eagle Invitational in late April. She had her top triple jump finishes in both indoor and outdoor as a freshman in 2012-13.
Earlier in her career, Wright was a multi-event athlete, as she competed in the sprints, middle distance, high jump and shot put. She was a participant in the indoor pentathlon at the 2014 American Athletic Conference Championships and placed 12th.
Wright has had an equally impressive career in the classroom while attending the University of Memphis. She was a two-time American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team honoree in 2014 and 2015 and also earned Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll recognition in 2013. A Tiger 3.0 student, Wright received her bachelor's degree in exercise and sport science at the school's 2016 commencement in mid-May.
