Tigers Force Second Semifinal Game but Fall Short

Memphis blasted UConn 9-5 to force a second game Saturday
The Tigers (22-39) exploded for four runs in the bottom of the first inning of Saturday's first game and went on to score nine runs over the first three innings.
The Memphis offense blasted four doubles, two triples and two homers and was backed by a career-long outing by Drew Crosby in his first career start. The sophomore lefty tossed four innings and allowed just one run on five hits. Bryan Cruse pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief and Trey McNickle tossed the final 2 1/3 scoreless innings and earned the win.
In the second game of the day starting pitcher Jonathan Bowlan was outstanding, pitching a career high seven innings and allowing three runs on six hits. Nolan Blackwood and Alex Hicks worked the final inning.
Darien Tubbs, Zach Schritenthal and Brandon Grudzielanek all had strong performances in the tournament with seven hits apiece, including several extra-base hits. Jake Overbey led the team in hitting throughout the week with a .357 average, five hits and four runs driven in.
Memphis finished the season on a high note, winning three straight games for just the second time this season after dropping the tournament opener.
Six seniors – Corey Chafin, Damo DeMatteo, Matt Ferguson, Jake Little, Trey McNickle and Jake Overbey – played their final games in a Tiger uniform this week in the tournament.
