Tigers senior placed fourth in event at Friday's NCAA East Preliminaries.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of Memphis senior Carolina Carmichael earned a trip to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., with her top-12 finish in the women's pole vault at the NCAA East Preliminaries Friday.
Friday was the second day of action at the NCAA East Preliminaries. The NCAA three-day meet is being held at Hodges Stadium on the University of North Florida campus.
Carmichael tied for fourth in the women's pole vault with a mark of 13-11.25 (4.25m) and advances to the NCAA Championships June 8-11. It is Carmichael's third-straight trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, as she placed 10th in the women's pole vault in both the 2014 and 2015 national meets. She earned All-American honors both seasons.
The Lake Forest, Ill., native also competed in the women's pole vault at this year's NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala., in March. Carmichael placed 15th in the event.
Clara Amat-Fernandez, Carmichael's fellow senior teammate, just missed advancing to the NCAA Championships. Amat-Fernandez finished 13th with a mark of 13-9.25 (4.20m), with the event's top-12 places moving on to the NCAA Championships. Dorina Baiker tied for 35th place with a 12-11.5 (3.95m) vault.
In other women's action, Martine Bye placed 31st in the high jump (5-7.25; 1.71m). On Thursday, she finished 34th in the women's javelin.
On the men's side, the Tigers had another near-qualifier in the javelin, but Michael Criticos fell a foot shy of reaching the NCAA Championships. His javelin throw of 220-5 (67.18m) placed him 14th in the event, and the top-12 advanced to the NCAA national meet.
Rafael Vallery and Luke Vaughn both competed in the men's discus. Valley placed 33rd (170-4; 51.93m), but Vaughn fouled on his discus attempts.
Vaughn gets a second attempt to qualify for the NCAA Championships Saturday when he throws in the men's shot put. He won the American Athletic Conference shot put title two weeks ago.
Others competing Saturday are Jordan Wesner in the men's high jump, Chardae Greenlee in the women's triple jump and Martina Rodriguez Sala in the women's 1500 meter quarterfinals.
