Has helped men's tennis to three NCAA appearances in his four seasons in Memphis.
MEMPHIS – Chris Doerr has been elevated to associate head coach of the Memphis men's tennis team it was announced by head coach Paul Goebel, Wednesday.
Doerr has been a member of the Memphis staff for the past four seasons. He came to Memphis in 2012, serving as the program's volunteer assistant coach, then was hired as the program's assistant coach in 2013 when former assistant coach Mark Finnegan took over the program at North Florida.
Last season, Doerr was recognized as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Ohio Valley Assistant Coach of the Year, becoming just the second Tiger coach to earn that honor from the national organization.
With Doerr on staff, the University of Memphis men's tennis team has qualified for the NCAA Tournament three times in the past four seasons, including a first round appearance against Doerr's alma mater, Mississippi State, this season. After helping Memphis to the Round of 16 in 2013 and a second round appearance in 2014, Doerr helped recruit most of the current roster to Memphis and helped coach the squad of mostly freshmen and sophomores back to the NCAA tournament.
In the last two seasons, recruits Doerr helped bring to Memphis captured four post-season awards from the American Athletic Conference. Andrew Watson was named the American Athletic Conference's freshman of the year in 2015 and three players (now sophomores) have already earned all-conference honors – Kai Lemke (doubles, 2015), Watson (singles, 2015) and Ryan Peniston (singles, 2016).
