Tigers opening season with back-to-back home tournaments.
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis volleyball team will open its 2016 fall schedule with back-to-back home tournaments, then will open conference play with four of its first six American Athletic Conference matches on the road, it was announced Wednesday.
Memphis will play in four non-conference tournaments in preparation for conference play, including back-to-back home events to start the season. At the season-opening Memphis Invitational, Memphis will host Chicago State, Central Arkansas and the first of three NCAA tournament teams from last season on the schedule – Belmont. That tournament will run Aug. 26-27.
Memphis' second home event, the Tiger Invitational, will be held Sept. 2-3 and will feature Jackson State, Eastern Illinois and Louisiana Tech.
After the back-to-back home weekends, the team will take to the road for a pair of non-conference tournaments in Alabama. Memphis will participate in the Auburn tournament, Sept. 9-10, facing Auburn, Jacksonville and Miami (Ohio), then will venture to Birmingham the following weekend to play in the UAB event, Sept. 16-17, facing UL Lafayette, UT Martin and UAB.
Memphis will open conference play the weekend of Sept. 23 and 25th, playing at UCF and USF, respectively. After returning home to host UConn (Sept. 30), then will host Temple, Oct. 2nd, the first of three matches in four outings against teams that won 20 matches last season. Memphis will face a Temple squad that went 24-8 last year, then, after playing at East Carolina, Oct. 7, the team will face Cincinnati, a team that was 21-10 last year, on Oct. 9th. That tough stretch closes against defending conference champs SMU, Fri., Oct. 14. SMU was 27-6 last year en route the tournament title and an NCAA tournament appearance.
That SMU match does, however, start a four-match home stand that then includes Tulsa (Oct. 16), Houston (Oct. 21) and Tulane (Oct. 23). After a northeast road swing at Temple (Oct. 28) and UConn (Oct. 30), the Tigers return home to host USF (Nov. 4) and UCF (Nov. 6). The team is then back on the road for four straight, playing at Tulane (Nov. 11) and Houston (Nov. 13), then playing at Tulsa (Nov. 18) and SMU (Nov. 20) before closing their regular season against Cincinnati (Nov. 25) and East Carolina (Nov. 26).
