Jonathan Bowlan tossed 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis avoided being swept for a third consecutive weekend with a 3-2 weather-shortened win over UConn Sunday at FedExPark. The game was called with two outs in the top of the seventh inning due to inclement weather.
Starting pitcher Jonthan Bowlan allowed just three hits in 5 2/3 scoreless innings in his first career weekend start. The freshman also started Tuesday against Belmont and allowed just one run in four innings. For the week Bowlan pitched 9 2/3 innings and allowed just one run on six hits.
Memphis broke the scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the fourth inning when designated hitter Colton Neel drove in a run with an RBI groundout. The Tigers were able to get a second run home when Brandon Grudzielanek advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an errant throw by the Huskie's catcher.
UConn loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the sixth to end Bowlan's day despite not allowing a run. Connor Alexander came in to pitch in relief and got a strikeout to end the threat.
The Tigers added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double by Jacob Elliott that scored Jake Little from first base to make the score 3-0.
UConn scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to cut the Memphis lead to 3-2 just before the game went into a weather delay.
