Tigers to play a little over a half in a game clock situation.
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis football team will load on to buses and prepare for an 'away' event when the team travels to Nashville for their second scrimmage of the spring, Saturday. Memphis will play a scrimmage at Father Ryan High School beginning between 3:00-3:30. The Memphis Alumni Association will host a pre-scrimmage tailgate beginning at 1:30 p.m. with free hot dogs and sodas.
"We were sitting around and thinking of what we can do to help prepare our guys," Norvell said when asked about the reasoning for adding the Nashville scrimmage to the 15-practice schedule. "A lot of things we are doing in spring practice is to get our players different experiences. I'd be lying if I said recruiting wasn't also a part of it, because we're looking to recruit Nashville. We want Nashville, and former Tigers and high school coaches and players that are over there, to be come out and see this team. We obviously can't talk to any of the kids while we are there due to NCAA rules, but I want people to see this football team. I'm proud of this football team. I'm proud and honored of who I get to coach."
The Saturday scrimmage will be practice number nine on the Tigers' spring schedule and will be their second scrimmage of the spring. The team's first practice had some strong moments for the defense and the Tigers then spent the past week on even more situational work, including a Thursday session that included some third and long work and some reps in a two-minute drill.
"The more situations we can put our guys through that prep them for that one play that's going to be the impact play of the game, the better we're going to get.," Norvell said. "I'm excited about where we're at. Saturday is going to be another big evaluation day for us, and going on the road with a road game mentality, we're looking forward to it."
The format for the second scrimmage will differ from the first, which went almost 150 plays, including special teams situations.
"It'll be a little bit more than a half, maybe three quarters, with a game clock," Norvell said. "Then a couple of situations there at the end, maybe an overtime, maybe a two minute drill, but I want to see the guys play."
Admission for the scrimmage is free. The pre-scrimmage tailgate will be on the west side of the gym. Free hot dogs, chips, cookies, sodas and water will be served. Alcohol and smoking is not allowed on the Father Ryan campus.
