Lawson led AAC in rebounding, and was fourth in scoring
HOUSTON, Texas – Memphis freshman forward Dedric Lawson was named to the 2016 Kyle Macy Freshman All-America team, announced by CollegeInsider.com.
Lawson, the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, was also named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District squad. Lawson set an AAC record by being named the Conference Rookie of the Week six times during the season, breaking the previous record of four honors.
The AAC Second Team honoree was twice named a Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) Player of the Week. For his efforts at The American Tournament, was named to the All-Tournament Team.
He averaged 15.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game during the season – both leading the team – while finishing second on the team in blocked shots and steals, and third in assists.
His 17 double-doubles in 2015-16 tied the Memphis freshman single-season record, joining Keith Lee at the top of the list. His double-double total was the fourth-most by a freshman in the NCAA this season, and 19th overall in Division I this year.
He also finished 39th in the country in total rebounds (307) and 42nd in rebounds per game (9.3). His rebounding total is the third-highest freshman total in Memphis basketball history, while his rebounding average is the fourth-best among Memphis freshmen.
The award is named after 1975 Indiana Mr. Basketball Kyle Macy, who played his freshman season at Purdue University, averaging 13.8 points per game while leading the Boilermakers in free throws. After playing his freshman year at Purdue, Macy transferred to the University of Kentucky in 1976.
He started every game for the Wildcats in 1977. A three-time All-America and three-time All-SEC player, Macy was a member of Kentucky's 1978 National Championship team. In his senior year of 1979-80, he became the first Kentucky player ever to be named consensus Southeastern Conference Player of the Year.
Duke's Brandon Ingram was named the Freshman of the Year.
