Continuing a tradition started by head coach Daron Schoenrock, the Tigers will retire the jersey of former player Terry Pressgrove prior to Saturday's game. Pressgrove played for the Tigers from 1977-78 and was instrumental in leading the Tigers to a 40-9 record an appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 1978.
Upon the completion of his career, Pressgrove held the Memphis record for most home runs in a season, most home runs in a career, most RBI in a season, most games played in a season and most total bases in a career. A .354 career hitter, Pressgrove helped his Tiger teammates win the 1978 National Batting Championship with a .357 team average.
Leading Off
• For a second consecutive weekend Memphis avoided being swept with a Sunday win to salvage a series. The win over Cincinnati also kept the Tigers out of last place in the American Athletic Conference standings.
• UConn lost two-of-three to nationally-ranked East Carolina last weekend. The Huskies won the series opener in extra innings before falling to the Pirates in the next two games.
• The Tigers won the series over the Huskies last year in Connecticut. It took a 15th inning home run from Kane Barrow in the series finale to seal the win.
• Jake Little is having a solid senior season for the Tigers. The four-year Memphis player is batting a team-high .333 with 21 RBI and 29 runs scored after suffering an injury-plagued season in 2015.
• Next to Jake Little, newcomer Brandon Grudzielanek is the only other Tiger to start every game this season. The JuCo transfer is batting .280 with 27 RBI and 23 runs scored while starting games at second base, shortstop and third base.
• The Tigers started the season with a platoon at first base before sophomore Jacob Elliott took over at the position. Elliott has started the last 27 games at first base for Memphis and is batting .282 with 20 RBI and 17 runs scored.
• Preseason All-American Nolan Blackwood recorded his 22nd career save in the April 9 win over USF and now holds the program record for career saves.
• Memphis stands in the top 50 in the NCAA with 61 stolen bases this season. The Tigers have been successful on the base paths as an entire team and no Memphis player is in the individual top 50 in the country in stolen bases.
• One of Memphis' strengths last season was its bullpen which compiled a 3.50 ERA with a 15-6 record and 16 saves. This season the relief corps have struggled with a 6.67 ERA, a 4-6 record and five saves.
• All home games are streamed live online by the Memphis Tiger Network at GoTigersGo.com/Watch. WUMR U 92-FM carries the radio broadcasts throughout the season. Jeff Brightwell, who is joined by Greg Gaston for home games, will be on the call.
• The Memphis baseball program is in its fourth season as a partner with Baden Sports and swings the Axe Bat exclusively.
