Memphis Wins 3-2 in Final Non-Conference Game of the Season
Apr 27, 2016 | Softball
Tigers get nine hits in one-run victory, as all three runs in the game came with two outs
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tigers recorded nine hits and three runs, holding on for a 3-2 win over the UT Martin Skyhawks on Wednesday afternoon, in Memphis' final non-conference game of the season.
Memphis (24-26) will next host American Athletic Conference foe Tulsa in a three-game series starting on Friday, April 29 at the Tigers Softball Complex.
Two freshman players – Regan Hadley and Jessie Lamb – had two hits in the game, each going 2-for-3. Five others: Lindsay Crowdus, Hannah Harrell, Lindsey Stickrod, Tyler Johnson, and Kyler Trosclair each had one hit. Stickrod, Brittany Seale, and Lamb each drove in a run, while Crowdus, Brooke Lee, and Hadley scored once.
Molly Smith improved to 10-12 on the season as she went the entire game, striking out three over her seven innings in the circle, scattering six hits and walking one while giving up just one earned run.
UT Martin (28-21) scored first in the game when leadoff hitter Carly Gonzalez doubled to open the game before being moved to third on an error, and scoring on a groundout from Jodie Duncan.
Memphis answered back quickly, as the Tigers drew a leadoff walk from Crowdus, with Harrell hitting an infield single a batter later. After a pop-up and strikeout, Lee was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Seale drew a four-pitch bases-loaded walk to push around Crowdus for the run.
An inning later Hadley opened the inning with a single through the right side, before Lamb reached on an infield single to put runners on first and second. A strikeout and foul-out once again put two outs on the scoreboard, before Stickrod singled up the middle to score Hadley.
The Tigers threatened again in the fourth inning, loading the bases before a foul-out ended the threat, but tacked on what would eventually be the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lee drew an inning-opening walk, before getting advanced to second on a one-out infield single from Trosclair. A fielder's choice eliminated Trosclair and advanced Lee to third; however, put the second out on the scoreboard. Lamb followed with a sharp single up the middle to score Lee and give the Tigers their final run total.
The Skyhawks threatened a comeback in the top of the seventh, as the team got a two-out single from Aeron Smith to score Lauren Myers; however, pinch-runner Alicia Hansen was thrown out at second base attempting to steal – Seale's second caught stealing of the game – to clinch the contest for the Tigers.
