Simmons becomes 14th Tiger to earn spot in honor society.
MEMPHIS – Former Memphis offensive lineman Micah Simmons was named to the National Football Foundation's (NFF) Hampshire Honor Society, Wednesday. The Honor Society is made up of college football players from all divisions of play who have maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college career. In total, there were 868 players from 275 schools in this year's Honor Society class, a record number of honorees in the program's 10th season.
Simmons, who graduated magna cum laude in May of 2015 with a degree in Health & Human Performance, played in 46 career games for Memphis, including all 13 games last season, with 35 career starts. He will receive his Master of Science in Health and Sport Science with a concentration in Sport and Leisure Commerce next Saturday. In his four-year Memphis career, Simmons played multiple positions across the offensive line, with starts at right guard, left guard and center.
After coming to Memphis from Lindale, Texas, Simmons played in all 12 games in his true freshman campaign, starting three of the last four games of the year. By 2014, he helped Memphis to its first conference championship since 1971 and the program's second 10-win season. As a senior, he helped block for a Tiger offense that ranked 19th in the country in total offense with 486.9 yards per game and 11thin scoring offense with 40.2 ppg. The Tigers' passing offense also ranked 18th in the country (307.5 ypg) and eighth in third down conversion percentage (48.8 percent) and tied for 18th in red zone offense (88.9 percent).
Simmons was a semifinalist for the NFF Scholar-Athlete Award back in September. With his inclusion in this year's Hampshire Honor Society class, he becomes just the 14th Memphis player to receive the award, following Charles Harris' honor last season.
