Jonathan Bowlan pitches six innings for second straight start
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis trailed by just one run going to the sixth inning before allowing four two-out runs and eventually falling 7-0 to Ole Miss Tuesday night at AutoZone Park. The Tigers (13-24, 4-5 AAC) allowed all seven runs to be scored with two outs in the game.
Jonathan Bowlan logged his second straight start of six innings. The freshman allowed just four earned runs on eight hits. He struck out three batters and walked just one.
A two-out error started a rally for Ole Miss in the top of the second inning. Bowlan walked the next batter he faced and then allowed an RBI single to give the Rebels a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers had a great chance to get on the board in the second when Jacob Elliott and Brandon Grudzielanek started the inning with back-to-back singles. After a failed attempt to sacrifice the runners into scoring position, back-to-back strikeouts ended the Tigers' threat.
Chris Carrier helped Bowlan and the Tigers get out of a jam in the third inning when he made a diving catch in left field and threw the ball back in to throw out a runner and turn an inning-ending double play.
The Rebels blew the game open in the top of the sixth, scoring four two-out runs including a pair of home runs.
Colton Neel worked a scoreless seventh inning in relief and was nearly through the eighth unblemished as well before a two-out solo home run extended the Rebels' lead to 6-0.
Ole Miss added one more run in the top of the ninth off of the relief trio of Trevor Sutton, Trey McNickle and Alex Smith.
The Tigers will head back out on the road for a three-game weekend series at American Athletic Conference leader Cincinnati.
