MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis women's tennis team will start its 2016 American Athletic Conference tournament run on Wednesday, at noon on courts 1-6 at the Dunavant-Wellford Tennis Center at Memphis University School. The Tigers, the number 11 seed in the draw, will face number six seeded East Carolina. The team that wins that Wednesday match-up will advance to the quarterfinals and will face number two seeded UCF at 3 p.m., Thursday.
The match up on the courts at MUS could be the final home appearance for senior Kathryn Hughes, who transferred to Memphis prior to last season from the University of Denver. Hughes has moved up from what would normally be her number three spot in the lineup due to injury and has posted a 4-9 mark at two singles, including two straight wins. Hughes also moved up in the Tigers' last two matches to play at one doubles with Hanna Sohn.
Junior Gabrielle Paul is also bringing a two-match winning streak in singles play in to the tournament. Paul, who was 2-0 at six singles before the injury to number one singles player Anki Wind, has moved up to five singles and grabbed wins in the last two outings to improve to 3-10 in dual season play at five singles.
Tulsa is the top seed for the tournament and will receive a first round bye. The Golden Hurricane awaits the winner of the #8 Tulane vs #9 UConn match. The Green Wave and the Huskies will square off at 9 a.m., Wednesday, then the winner advances to a Thursday noon match against Tulsa.
While Memphis and East Carolina are facing off on courts one through six at noon on Thursday, #7 Temple and #10 Cincinnati will square off on courts seven through 12, also at noon. The winner of the Temple/Cincinnati match will face #2 seeded USF Thursday at 3 p.m.
Number four and five seeded SMU and Houston also received first round byes in to the quarterfinal round. The two Texas-based teams will face off at noon, Thursday, on courts 7-12 at MUS.
Live scoring from the tournament will be available at www.Memphisstatbroadcast.com.
