Fifth-consecutive year that three or more Tigers programs have been honored.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – For the fifth-straight year, the University of Memphis Athletics Department had at least of its three programs receive Academic Progress Rate (APR) public recognition from the NCAA. The NCAA national office released its list of institutions and athletics teams receiving Public Recognition Awards Monday.
This year, the three Memphis programs that received NCAA Public Recognition Awards were men's cross country, rifle and women's golf. Memphis tied for fourth among American Athletic Conference member institutions in number of NCAA Public Recognition Awards received and only trailed Tulane (seven), Connecticut (four) and Temple (four).
The Academic Progress Rate is a real-time measure of eligibility and retention of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team. The most recent APR scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years.
Based on their most recent multiyear Academic Progress Rate, teams earn NCAA Public Recognition Awards for posting scores in the top-10 percent of their sport. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally.
The scores required to be in the top-10 ranged from 983 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport. Earning a perfect APR score were 944 teams. This marked the 11th year of APR for most athletics programs.
For Tigers women's golf, it is the sixth-consecutive year it has earned an NCAA Public Recognition Award. Since the NCAA began awarding public recognition in 2004-05, the Memphis women's golf has been honored seven times (2004-05; 2009-10 through 2014-15).
It is the second-straight year Memphis men's cross country and rifle have earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards. It is the third time the Tigers rifle program has been honored, as it received recognition for 2004-05, 2013-14 and 2014-15.
Overall, more than 1,000 NCAA Division I sports teams were recognized for outstanding performance in the classroom. The 1,071 teams publicly recognized for high achievement include 649 women's teams and 422 men's or mixed squads.
Since the NCAA began honoring athletics programs in 2004-05, Memphis has had eight teams receive public recognition a total of 25 times.
