Regular season finale will also be senior day for Louis Asser.
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis men's tennis team (14-8, 2-1 American) will close its regular season, Sunday, with an American Athletic Conference clash against two-time defending champs USF (16-8, 3-1 American), at The Racquet Club of Memphis, beginning at 1 p.m. Admission to the match is free and the Sunday conference event will also be senior day for the Tigers' Louis Asser.
Memphis is putting a five-match winning streak on the line against #19 ranked USF. The Tigers have won seven of their last eight matches, with the lone loss in that streak coming to #42 ranked Dartmouth on a windy day outdoors at The Racquet Club of Memphis.
USF is coming off a 7-0 road win at #24 ranked Tulsa on Friday that improved the Bulls to 16-8 on the year and 3-1 in the league. Senior Roberto Cid, the number three ranked singles player in the country, brings some serious momentum in to the Sunday match. Cid has won five straight, including a win over Tulane's Dominik Koepfer, the country's top ranked singles player, Koepfer's lone loss on the year.
The Sunday match will feature four of the country's ranked singles players, each team with two ranked entries. Memphis is led by No. 67 ranked Ryan Peniston and No. 88 ranked Andrew Watson. USF has number three ranked Cid and number 44 ranked Dominic Cotrone. Cotrone has played a majority of his matches at two singles on the year, sporting a 6-5 mark there, while Cid is 18-2 at one singles.
Cotrone also teams with Justin Roberts to hold down the one doubles spot, where the duo is 8-2 and currently ranked No. 27 in the country. The USF pairing of Sasha Gozun and Vadym Kalyuzhnyy is just behind their teammates in the doubles rankings at No. 32 with a 7-3 mark at two doubles.
For Memphis, both Watson and Peniston have spent time at one singles on the year. Watson is 6-4 at one and 5-1 at two, while Peniston is 6-2 at one and 8-2 at two. Peniston leads Memphis with a 27-8 overall record, including 14 wins in dual season play. Fellow sophomore Kai Lemke is also past the 20-win mark on the year with a 23-11 overall record, including a 10-6 mark at three singles.
USF is looking to repeat their 2014 Memphis experience. Like that matchup, the two teams faced one another in the regular season finale. Memphis won the regular season matchup to earn the top in the inaugural American Athletic Conference tournament draw, but USF stayed in town and prepped for a run to their first American Athletic Conference championship title, beating Memphis in the finals on the Racquet Club courts. Unlike 2014, the 2016 American Athletic Conference Championships will be held at Memphis University School (MUS) this time, as the league began hosting both the men's and women's tennis championships in the same location on the same dates last year.
Live scoring from the Sunday match will be available at memphis.statbroadcast.com.
Admission to the 1 p.m. match is free.
