ECU Clinches Series Saturday at FedExPark

Series finale Sunday at noon
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis scored two runs in the sixth inning to trim the East Carolina lead but the Pirates countered with a four-run seventh to win 8-2 and take the series Saturday at FedExPark. The finale is scheduled for Sunday at noon.
Connor Alexander started and logged 6 1/3 innings. The sophomore allowed four runs one seven hits with five strikeouts.
ECU grabbed the lead in the second inning after a leadoff double into the gap in left-center field. The first run of the game came home on a two-out single to center.
Memphis had a great opportunity to answer when Andy Bowman and Trent Turner opened the second with back-to-back singles but after a failed attempt to sacrifice the runners, a double play ended the inning.
The Pirates added to their lead with a two-out two-run double off the wall in left field. Another two-out run came home in the fourth inning to extend the Pirates' lead out to 4-1.
Memphis broke up the shutout in the sixth when Chris Carrier lined an RBI single to left field. A second run in the inning came home on a wild pitch that scored Jacob Elliott from third base to trim the ECU lead to 4-2.
ECU put the game away with a four-run top of the seventh inning.
James Muse, Alex Smith, Trey McNickle and Hunter Smith all pitched in relief. Hunter Smith logged two scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.
