Third-straight national championships appearance for Fister.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis' Amy Fister heads to Akron, Ohio, this weekend to compete in the smallbore discipline at the 2016 NCAA Rifle Championships. The University of Akron's Stile Athletics Field House is the host site for this year's national championships.
The NCAA individual smallbore championships start at approximately 2:30 p.m. (CT) Friday.
This is the third-straight season Fister is representing the Tigers at the NCAA Rifle Championships. It also is the second-consecutive season the junior is competing in the smallbore individual championships.
"I'm thrilled that Amy has another opportunity to compete at the NCAA Championships," said Tigers head coach Butch Woolbright. "This isn't her first 'rodeo' at the championships, as she's been there before.
"Amy has been a consistent shooter for us all season and especially over the last month. If she performs at that level, she'll do fine this weekend."
At the 2015 NCAA Championships in Fairbanks, Alaska, Fister, then a sophomore, placed 20th in smallbore with a 577 score. In her first collegiate season in 2013-14, Fister was a member of the Tigers rifle squad that placed fourth overall at the 2014 NCAA Championships, the highest team finish in the program's history. Memphis placed third in smallbore at the 2014 championships.
Fister earned All-America honorable mention recognition in smallbore in 2013-14. She also garnered All-Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) honorable mention accolades in smallbore three-straight seasons (2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16). For the first time in 2015-16, Fister received All-GARC honorable mention distinction for aggregate (smallbore-air rifle).
In 2015-16, Fister competed in all 13 smallbore competitions and posted an average score of 579.6 in the discipline. Her 2015-16 smallbore average was 4.5 points better than last season's 575.1 average.
She shot a season-high 584 in smallbore twice, with both scores coming in the season's last month in a dual match against Ole Miss Feb. 9 and at the NCAA Sectional Qualifier Feb. 20. Fister had three first-place smallbore performances against Nebraska Oct. 24 (583), Navy Nov. 14 (580) and Ole Miss Feb. 9 (584).
This season, Fister posted her career-high aggregate score of 1174 versus Ole Miss Feb. 9. She had aggregate scores of 1170 or higher four times in 2015-16. In aggregate score, the Kutztown, Pa., native raised her average over 10 points from 1155.2 in 2014-15 to 1165.6 this season.
