Four Tigers To Compete In Texas Relays Thursday, Friday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Four University of Memphis track and field athletes are traveling to Austin, Texas, Thursday and Friday, Mar. 31-Apr. 1 to compete in the 2016 Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. The University of Texas hosts the annual four-day meet, which is in its 89th year.
The Longhorn Network (LHN) is providing 14 hours of television coverage over the four-day event, including 11 hours live. BranchSportsTech.com is hosting the meet's live results.
The four Memphis athletes competing are Clara Amat-Fernandez (women's pole vault), Carolina Carmichael (women's pole vault), Martina Rodriguez Sala (women's 1500m) and Luke Vaughn (men's discus and shot put).
On Friday, Vaughn throws the discus at 9 a.m. (CT) and shot put at 10 a.m. (CT), while Amat-Fernandez and Carmichael start the pole vault event at 10 a.m. (CT). Rodriguez Sala runs in the 1500 meters Saturday at 3:35 p.m. (CT).
In the outdoor season opener at the John Mitchell Alabama Relays Mar. 19, Rodriguez Sala won the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:24.22. Her time was only 1.5 seconds off her school record 4:22.72 set in 2015. Her 4:24.22 time is the 18th-best in the nation to date this outdoor season.
For Amat-Fernandez and Carmichael, the Texas Relays is the second outdoor meet for both. Amat-Fernandez (Alabama Relays) and Carmichael (Vanderbilt Black & Gold Invitational) each posted a 13-3.5 (4.05m) vault in the first two weeks of the outdoor campaign. Amat-Fernandez placed third at the Alabama Relays, and Carmichael was first at the Vanderbilt Black & Gold Invitational. Their 13-3.5 (4.05m) vaults are tied for the nation's 33rd-best mark in the event this season.
Vaughn competed in both the discus and shot put at last weekend's Vanderbilt Black & Gold Invitational. He posted top-five finishes in both events, placing second in the discus (178-9; 54.49m) and fifth in the shot put (53-5.5; 16.29m).
The Tigers also are scheduled to compete at Southeast Missouri's Joey Haines Invitational Friday and Saturday, Apr. 1-2 in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
