Tiger Football Dons Pads For First Time in Spring Ball

Memphis wraps up week with camp session #3.
MEMPHIS – The third practice of the 2016 Memphis football spring camp had a little different sound as the team was able to don pads for the first time in camp, Saturday morning. It was an opportunity for the Memphis coaching staff to see if some of the speed they saw in shirts and shorts was still there when the pads were on.
"I think it was a good practice in a sense that we got to see guys play football the way football is supposed to be played," Head Coach Mike Norvell said. "I think we did a good job of running around. We still pushed the amount of install because, like I said, today was going to be another big installation day. We had third down emphasis and it kind of showed, we had too many mistakes out there, mentally, but that's something that I'm expecting here early. We're going to back up on the installations the next couple of days and really let guys continue to focus on fundamentals, soaking it in and getting out there and playing fast."
Memphis wrapped up its first calendar week of practice with a full practice in front of a number of junior day visitors, offering a peek at the type of effort Norvell and his staff expect from the Tigers.
"I don't care if you're a corner, if you're a holder, I don't care what position you're playing, you're going to be physical being a part of this program," Norvell said. "I was definitely excited in a lot of things I saw out there today and we're looking forward to getting out there Tuesday to clean up some mistakes."
Memphis will continue spring camp with three practices next week. In two weeks, the Tigers will take their camp on the road, playing a scrimmage in Nashville at Father Ryan High School at 3 p.m, on Saturday, Apr. 9th. Memphis will wrap up spring ball with Friday Night Stripes on Friday, April 22nd at 7 p.m. at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.
