Memphis hosting pair of matches over the weekend.
MEMPHIS – The Memphis women's tennis team will host VCU, Friday, at noon, at The Racquet Club of Memphis. The match is part of a two-match home weekend that will include a Sunday contest against in-state foe Middle Tennessee as part of Memphis' senior day festivities for senior Kathryn Hughes.
The return to action comes after an almost two week break in competitions for Memphis. Memphis last played on Mar. 12th, falling 4-1 to visiting Iowa State. But the one Tiger point in that match belonged to Hughes with her win at two singles. As her Memphis career winds down, she will look to close with more wins at home with two opportunities this weekend.
VCU is bringing a young lineup to Memphis for the Friday afternoon match. Of the eight players on the roster, six are freshmen. The young lineup has had its ups and downs, posting a 4-8 overall record on the year. But the Rams have already faced one American Athletic Conference opponent, getting edged 4-3 by East Carolina about a month ago. After a 4-3 win at Marshall, the team fell 6-0 at South Alabama back on Mar. 10th, but have not played match since then, so like the Tigers, the Rams will be looking to knock off some competitive cobwebs.
On Sunday, Memphis will host Middle Tennessee at noon. In between the doubles and singles point, the team will honor their lone senior, Hughes.
The Lady Raiders have a new coaching staff who should be pretty comfortable on the courts at The Racquet Club of Memphis. Head coach Charlie Ramsay and assistant coach David Henry are both former Memphis letterwinners from the men's team and are in their first year with the Middle Tennessee program.
Middle Tennessee is 9-7-1, having suffered the rare tie when a road match in San Diego was rained out tied at 2-all.
Admission to both matches is free. Live scoring will be available at memphis.statbroadcast.com.
