Molly Smith strikes out nine in second consecutive shutout
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Molly Smith recorded her second consecutive shutout while striking out nine UConn hitters in leading the Tigers to a 7-0 American Athletic Conference-opening win for Memphis.
Memphis (17-16, 1-0 AAC) was led by Lindsey Stickrod, who went 2-for-2 with three runs scored while Lindsay Crowdus went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI's. Regan Hadley was 1-for-2 with two RBI's on a two-run home run, while scoring twice.
Smith scattered six hits over the seven innings of work while walking two and hitting one UConn batter en route to improving to 5-6 on the season in the circle.
The two teams return to the Tigers Softball Complex on Friday, March 25 for the second game of a three-game series, with first pitch slated for 5 p.m. (CT).
The Tigers struck first in the bottom of the second inning when Brooke Lee knocked an inning-opening single into center field, and was followed by a single from first baseman Stickrod to put runners on first and second. A fly-out by Regan Hadley advanced the runners, before Hannah Harrell reached on a bunt single to load the bases.
Crowdus reached on a fielder's choice that saw Lee thrown out at the plate, before the Tigers scored three straight without making contact at the plate. Tyler Johnson drew a two-out walk to push Stickrod across the plate. Kyler Trosclair followed by getting hit by a pitch to score Harrell, before Jessie Lamb was also hit by a pitch, scoring Crowdus for the third and final run of the inning.
The Huskies (10-19, 0-1 American) threatened in the top of the third inning, loading the bases with three consecutive one-out singles; however, back-to-back looking strikeouts ended the threat, keeping the Huskies off of the board.
Memphis added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning when Crowdus hit a two-run single up the middle that scored Stickrod and Hadley, putting the Tigers ahead 5-0.
Following a scoreless fourth inning, Memphis got its final runs of the game when Hadley hit a two-run home run – her third of the season – scoring herself and Stickrod, putting Memphis ahead 7-0.
The Huskies went down in order in the top of the seventh to give the Tigers the win, and improving the team to 7-1 at the Tigers Softball Complex.
Kelli Bates went 3-for-4 at the plate for UConn, as she had half of the team's six hits in the contest. Chelsea Eckert fell to 4-10 on the season with the loss, giving up three earned runs over an inning and two-thirds to start the contest.
