Cabush and Colwill post top 25 finishes.
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis women's golf team shaved 15 strokes off its first round score and an additional six strokes off for its third round score to finish 13th with a 909 at the 3M Augusta Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club, Saturday. A pair of Tigers finished in the top 25 as Leighann Cabush and Sydney Colwill both salvaged a top 25 finish with solid Saturday play.
Cabush made her first move in a second round that included just three bogeys and a birdie on nine. That set her up for a third round that allowed her to go low, carding three birdies against two bogeys for a final round 71. That 71, combined her morning 74, gave her a 222, tying her for 21st overall at +6.
Right behind Cabush was Colwill. The freshman, who carded a 78 on Friday, followed that with a 74 and a 71 in today's two rounds. She had five birdies in her final round, including two in her final four holes to close at 223, good for 24th overall.
Andrea Cropper was the third Tiger in the standings. The redshirt junior posted a pair of Saturday 76s, including a birdie on her second-to-last hole, to finish tied for 56th overall with a 232.
Senior Ashleigh Whisenant saw a little of everything in her third round. She opened with birdies on her two of her first three holes, but gave those strokes back with a double on hole one. She recovered with birdies on both three and five, again losing one stroke on four with a bogey. On seven and eight, she went bogey and double to move to over par for the first time in the round, but then worked back to just one over with a birdie on nine. But she would finish with three bogeys in the last four holes to match her second round 76 for a 233, tying her for 61st overall.
Senior Julia Gerlach posted a 77 and 80 in her two rounds on Saturday after a first round 80 Friday. Her 237 allowed her to finish tied for 75th overall.
Host Augusta won the team title with an 861, riding a third round 280 to the tournament win. Coastal Carolina finished second at 871, while Furman was third with an 875.
East Carolina's F. Gustafsson Spang won the individual medalist honor with a 211 (73-71-67).
Memphis will be back in action at the San Diego State tournament, Mar. 21-23rd.
