Tigers Fall at South Florida 80-71

Dedric Lawson and Avery Woodson each score 17 in loss
TAMPA, Fla. – Memphis got 17 point efforts out of Dedric Lawson and Avery Woodson; however, the Tigers shot just 37 percent from the field and hit half of their 20 free throw tries in an 80-71 loss against the University of South Florida at the Sun Dome on Saturday morning.
Lawson recorded his 13th double-double of the season and fifth straight with 10 rebounds, while Ricky Tarrant Jr. added 10 points. Nick Marshall scored nine points with eight rebounds off of the bench, while Tarrant dished out a team-best four assists.
Memphis hit just 27 of its 74 shots in the game, a percentage of .365, while making 7-of-25 from long range (28.0 percent) and 10-of-20 at the free throw line. USF made 31-of-67 shots (46.3 percent) from the field and 2-of-10 from beyond the arc.
The teams started the game going back-and-forth, with the lead changing hands after every made basket – six times total – over the first seven minutes of the game. Trailing 7-6, USF ran off eight straight points to push ahead to a seven-point, 14-7 lead with 11:33 to play in the contest.
Memphis answered with a three-pointer from Craig Randall II and a lay-in by Lawson to close to within two, and after a UCF basket on the next possession, Lawson converted a three-point play to close the gap to one at 16-15.
Back-to-back Marshall baskets turned a two-point USF lead into a two-point Tiger advantage; however, a Bo Zeigler lay-in for USF sent the hosts into the locker room with a 31-30 lead at halftime.
The Tigers came out strong to start the second half, using an 11-6 run to push ahead by four following a Marshall dunk, and the visitors led by two after a Shaq Goodwin lay-in with 9:58 to play. USF answered with a 10-2 run, and after Memphis fought to within three the Bulls used a 9-0 run to push ahead by double digits before holding on for the 80-71 win.
Nehemias Morillo scored a game-high 19 points while Jahmal McMurray scored 17 and Chris Perry 16. Guerrero pulled down 11 rebounds to go with seven blocked shots.
The Tigers return to action on Thursday, February25 when the team hosts the SMU Mustangs in a 6 p.m. tip-off at FedExForum.
